Inland Sonoma is not the place to find surfers, but their boards will be there on Saturday, July 2, when "Surf Craft — Design and the Culture of Board Riding" opens at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.
Curated by San Diego surfer Richard Kenvin, and working its way north with the swell, the exhibition showcases the art of board shaping, dating back to the long wooden planks in ancient Hawaii and forward to fiberglass shorties with multiple fins.
Board shapers get about as much credit as mechanics at an auto race, but among the names represented in "Surf Craft" are Bob Simmons, Carl Ekstrom, Steve Lis, Terry Hendricks, George Greenough, Skip Frye, Danny Hess and Jon Wegener. Opening day will also feature an evening screening of "Chasing Mavericks" at the nearby Sebastiani Theatre.
